Marketing 101 for Artists

Prairie Pray Prayer, Pastel on Paper that is showing at the Online Exhibition Dream a Little Dream

OK, let me try to explain what I am doing now with my Instagram account and other social networks. My ultimate goal would be being represented by two or three galleries across North America and Europe, basically I have been working only with 33 contemporary and PoetsArtists in Chicago and in the last three years a have been invited to show my work in other galleries in Mexico City, Santa Monica California, Dublin Ireland and at the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art in Wisconsin. Ah, also my work was included in the Lunar Codex that will pose a time capsule on the surface of the Moon with the work of 30,000 artists, but the sales have been very low in the past year.

A friend in Mexico asked me about galleries in Toronto and I didn’t know what to say, I’m not working with any gallery here in Canada even when I live close from downtown Toronto. I have sent several letters to many galleries here with no success at all, I have shown my work just in one gallery in Canada: Gallery 1313 at Toronto in 2020.

So my plan started by being very active with art calls and submissions in North America and in Europe, after being named finalist in the renown 16th ARC salon I thought that I can have some possibilities or at least my plan was not out of reality.

I started to send submissions to any venue where my style could fit, if I’m a hyperrealistic artist it’s very difficult to fit besides abstract sculptures, right?

I have accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Twitter, Tumblr, TikTok, but my main account it’s Instagram, it is where you will see most of my post, and Instagram is famous for being a goo platform for artists, right?
I’m posting twice a day on Instagram (also reposted on Facebook) and at least once on Twitter, and not daily but I’m being much more active on Tiktok. So I think I have been doing my homework.

What are the results? Well not so well and it has been a disastrous years compared to 2022. I have been accepted in three art shows out of 28 submissions, that is around .100 when last year my average was around .300, that’s a third of the result in the last year. Followers? Well actually on Instagram is less that I expected and less that the average of the last year, same in Tiktok.

Now it looks like the more I invest in promotion the less the results. What’s going on? What’s next?

  1. Hi Carlos…
Speaking of marketing, you might want to check out and further recommend Beehighve…and check out my post on “How to make your blog popular”…you might find that interesting. That said, I’d like to cordially invite you to join us and become a member of Beehighve.

You would make a great addition to the members already registered from WordPress. Check out the about page and mission. If you like what you see then visit the How To page, (I’m adding all the links below). There’s a digital artist on there that’s posting and promoting his site and content and driving a lot of traffic to it. So maybe give it a try.

I built Beehighve two years ago, and now I’m working towards inviting exclusive members to help build a good colony of reliable bloggers across different genres and niches, such as military, art, education, fashion, and more..

We hope to see you there, and that Beehighve can be incorporated into your blogging goals!
