100 days 100 galleries; Day 39: Arts Illiana Gallery, Terre Haute IN

The mission of Arts Illiana is to promote, support, and enhance the arts and cultural activities of the Wabash Valley. Arts Illiana’s primary service area includes the Indiana counties of Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo. Interest is also given to the Illinois counties of Clark and Edgar.

Carlos Fentanes (CF): Hello,
I have been following you for a while and I don’t understand pretty well how you work. Is it a commercial gallery or a nonprofit organization or something in the middle?

Arts Illiana (AI): Arts Illiana is a not for profit arts organization dedicated to promoting all of the arts in our area. Arts Illiana Gallery is a professional gallery supported by Arts Illiana. More information is available on the website: artsilliana.com. Thanks!

I follow this gallery and they also follow me, probably because of their promotion strategy, all the time they organize collective exhibitions and they have open submissions too. Their work in the Wabash Valley promoting arts is remarkable and it’s an example of what people can do with a little bit of will and a big heart.

Sometimes I lost my purpose, sometimes I don’t even know what my purpose is, I started this project trying to hack into the secret of the Art Gallery World and now I found myself immersed into a very different world, about Art, yes, but also about social engagement, fight, politics, division… Exhibit in a gallery is not as important as have a voice and have something to talk about that resonates on other people. I’m no even in the middle of the project and now the purpose started to change, now it is not to have a representation from a gallery but to have a social engagement with the Art World and use my Art to support my community. When you start something you can devise your first step but you cannot see where the road will lead you. I’m happy with the result until now, with all their highs and lows.
